A Walk in the Park
by John Goto, for Celia
To illustrate his work the pioneering anatomist Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564), with the aid of artist Jan Stefan van Kalkar, depicted dissected cadavers posed within pastoral landscape settings.
To the modern eye this curious combination of verdant terrain and flayed figure conforms to neither the conventions of Art nor Science. The linkage does, however, point towards a contemporary understanding of the human body and its analogous relationship to ecological systems.
