The Turkish series was made in Istanbul in ten days. It was important in
establishing my
practice of working through a series of related and sequenced images. Experiencing
places firsthand,
walking, observing and making photographs became my method for years to come.
In this case I was fortunate to have as my traveling companion Charles Matheson,
whose
comprehensive knowledge of architectural and European history was to have
a lasting influence on me.
Finally I should mention the conjuncture of Alain Robbe-Grillet's film 'L'Immortelle',
which is set in the same location, with my own recurrent dreams of being lost
in a labyrinthine city.
