Soon after the 2016 referendum, Whitehall officials started talking about renewing old ties with Commonwealth countries in order to strike advantageous trade deals. This self-assured hubris was soon rejected by many of the countries of the old empire who had moved on and found new trading partners since the UK joined the EEC in 1973.
