The problem of keeping the Northern Irish/Republic of Ireland border open, became one of the main impediments to getting May’s deal through the House of Commons. Brexiteers promoted the idea that technological solutions could be employed to achieve a frictionless border without customs checks, thus obviating the need for the contentious backstop. Such technology is not, however, currently available nor employed anywhere in the world.
